Newcastle’s training ground discovery as hidden gem eyes senior debut in run-in

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has spoken of his excitement after the progress of teenage striker Sean Neave. Still just 17, and yet to make his senior debut, Neave has emerged from the second string this season after blasting in seven goals and two assists to catch Howe’s eye. The manager had enough faith in him to name him on the bench for the Carabao Cup final and while he did not get on he was able to experience the full workings of a major finals and pick up a winners medal. What happens next for Neave in the remainder of the season remains to be seen but the 6ft 1in centre-forward could well get his Premier League debut if he keeps impressing in training. When asked for an update on Winlaton lad Neave, Howe was full of praise for the England youth international. Howe told Chronicle Live: “He’s doing well. He’s very young and I need reminding of that sometimes. Because he is competing on an even field technically (with senior players). Physically, he has a lot of growth to come he has to fill out in his body. “He has to become stronger. It is probably now about finding him a set position. We have used him in various roles but what I will say is he is a goalscorer. We find in training and practice games he will pop up with a goal which is a great skill to have.” Speaking about his career so far at United, Neave said earlier this season: “Ever since I was young, it’s been my dream to play for Newcastle United so to sign a professional deal here is surreal. “I was really pleased to make my debut for the under-21s as it means next year, I can push on and try to make a few more appearances and hopefully score a few goals. Making my international debut was a really proud moment for me and my family. Playing for your country is one of the biggest things in football and I’m hoping that, next season, I can gain more appearances for England.” Neave netted in Newcastle second string’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last week.
